What Is Solid Surface?
Solid surface is a manufactured countertop material composed of acrylic or polyester resins combined with alumina trihydrate (ATH), a mineral derived from bauxite ore. The material is homogeneous — meaning the color and composition run all the way through, not just on the surface. This is what makes it repairable: you can sand out damage and the material underneath looks identical to what was on top.
The material was invented by DuPont in 1967 and introduced commercially as Corian in 1971. Since then, dozens of manufacturers have entered the market, but the fundamental chemistry remains similar.
