What Is Corian?
Corian is a brand of acrylic solid surface material first developed by DuPont scientist Donald Slocum in 1967 and introduced commercially in 1971. It is composed of approximately one-third acrylic resin (polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA) and two-thirds alumina trihydrate (ATH), a naturally derived mineral. The material is cast into sheets, creating a homogeneous product where color and composition are consistent throughout.
In 2019, DuPont divested its surfaces business, and Corian is now manufactured by Corian Design (a subsidiary of Hyosung Group). Despite this corporate change, the product formulation, color library, and quality standards remain consistent with the brand’s five-decade history.
The “Kleenex” Problem
Corian has become a genericized trademark in the construction industry. When a contractor says “we need Corian countertops,” they often mean “we need solid surface countertops” — just as someone asking for a “Kleenex” means any facial tissue. This matters practically because:
- Specification documents that say “Corian” may actually accept any solid surface brand
- Cost comparisons should include LG HI-MACS, Staron, Wilsonart, and other brands that often price lower than Corian
- “Corian or equal” language in specs explicitly opens the door to alternate brands
If a specification says “Corian, no substitution,” the architect means it and you must use the Corian brand specifically. But “Corian or equal” (the more common language) means you can price alternatives.

Color Groups and Pricing
Corian organizes its 130+ colors into pricing groups. As of current pricing, there are typically 5-6 color groups:
- Group 1 (lowest cost): Solid whites, off-whites, basic neutrals — Glacier White, Cameo White, Bisque
- Group 2: Light granulars and subtle patterns — Sahara, Rice Paper, Bone
- Group 3: Medium granulars, popular commercial colors — Fossil, Antarctica, Linen
- Group 4: Designer patterns, deeper colors — Witch Hazel, Silver Gray, Concrete
- Group 5 (highest cost): Premium patterns, translucents, deep darks — Deep Nocturne, Elderberry
For commercial projects, Groups 1-3 represent the majority of specifications. Group 1 whites and neutrals are the workhorses of healthcare and education projects. The premium groups add 15-30% to material cost and are typically reserved for high-visibility areas like lobby reception desks.
Sheet Sizes
- Standard: 30” x 144” (2.5’ x 12’)
- Jumbo: 30” x 145” (limited colors)
- Thickness: 1/2” (12mm) standard commercial; 1/4” (6mm) for backsplashes and wall cladding; 3/4” (19mm) for special applications
Corian Quartz (Separate Product)
Corian Design also manufactures Corian Quartz (engineered quartz countertops), which is a completely different material. Do not confuse Corian Solid Surface with Corian Quartz — they have different properties, fabrication methods, and pricing. When this article refers to “Corian,” it means the acrylic solid surface product exclusively.
Why Architects Specify Corian
Specification Familiarity
Corian has been in commercial specifications for over 50 years. Architects know it, have used it, and have specification templates built around it. This institutional familiarity means Corian appears on specs even when other solid surface brands would perform identically at lower cost. For contractors, this is an opportunity: submit Corian pricing alongside a color-matched alternative (LG HI-MACS, Staron) as a value engineering option.
Deepest Color Library
With 130+ colors, Corian offers more options than any competing solid surface brand. For projects requiring specific color coordination with flooring, wall finishes, or branding elements, Corian’s library gives designers the most flexibility.
Certified Fabricator Network
Corian Design maintains a certified fabricator network that provides warranty coverage and fabrication quality standards. Commercial projects requiring manufacturer warranties typically need a Corian-certified fabricator. This certification involves training, quality audits, and minimum equipment requirements.
Healthcare and Infection Control
Corian’s non-porous surface is compatible with EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectants, including bleach-based solutions, quaternary ammonium compounds, and hydrogen peroxide cleaners. This compatibility is documented in Corian’s published chemical resistance data and is critical for infection control surface specifications.
The material also carries GREENGUARD Gold certification for low chemical emissions, meeting IAQ standards for healthcare and education environments.
Corian in Specific Commercial Applications
Healthcare and Hospitals
Corian is the most-specified solid surface brand in U.S. healthcare. Applications include:
- Nurse stations: Long, L-shaped or U-shaped countertops with seamless joints, integrated transaction tops, and coved backsplashes
- Exam rooms: Wall-mounted counters with integrated sinks and no visible seams
- Pharmacy counters: Seamless, cleanable surfaces for medication preparation
- Waiting rooms and registration: Reception desks and writing surfaces
- Laboratories: Clinical laboratory work surfaces where chemical resistance and hygiene are required
The seamless, non-porous surface with thermoformed integrated backsplashes eliminates the crevices where bacteria can harbor. For hospitals undergoing Joint Commission accreditation, this is not a nice-to-have — it is a requirement.
Education
Corian appears in school science labs, cafeteria serving areas, restrooms, and administrative reception areas. For K-12 projects, the repairability is especially valuable: solid surface countertops that would be condemned in other materials get a 20-minute sand-and-buff repair in Corian.
Corporate and Hospitality
Curved reception desks, conference room credenzas, hotel lobby surfaces, and hospitality countertops use Corian when the design requires shapes and seamless joints that laminate cannot achieve. The ability to thermoform Corian into flowing curves makes it a favorite of designers for high-visibility commercial spaces.

The Honest Assessment
From a pure performance standpoint, the major acrylic solid surface brands are functionally equivalent. They use the same basic chemistry (acrylic resin + ATH), offer similar physical properties, and fabricate using the same tools and techniques. The differences are in color range, brand recognition, warranty programs, and pricing.
Corian commands a price premium based on brand recognition and specification familiarity. For contractors, this means:
- If the spec says “Corian, no substitution” — price Corian
- If the spec says “Corian or equal” — price Corian AND an alternative, present both options
- If the spec says “solid surface” generically — price the brand that best balances color selection, availability, and cost
Fabrication Considerations
Certified Fabricator Requirements
For projects requiring Corian manufacturer warranty, fabrication must be performed by a Corian-certified shop. Certification requirements include:
- CNC routing or templating equipment
- Vacuum clamping system for seaming
- Proper adhesive and color-match training
- Annual recertification
Adhesive and Color Matching
Corian provides color-matched adhesive for each of its 130+ colors. Proper seaming requires using the exact color-matched adhesive, proper surface preparation, clamping pressure, and cure time. Mismatched adhesive is the most common cause of visible seams — and it is always a fabricator error, not a material deficiency.
Thermoforming
Corian sheets are heated to 300-340°F in an oven and formed over custom molds or into radius bends. Minimum bend radius varies by thickness: 1/2” Corian can typically achieve an inside radius of 2-3 inches. Thermoforming is used for coved backsplashes, curved front edges, integral drainboards, and custom shapes.
Why It Matters for Contractors
Corian is the most recognized name in solid surface. Even if you fabricate with other brands, you need to understand Corian because:
- Architects spec it by name. Knowing Corian’s color library, specifications, and properties lets you engage intelligently with designers and offer informed alternatives when appropriate.
- Clients ask for it. Facility managers and general contractors often request “Corian” by default. Understanding what they actually need (seamless? non-porous? thermoformed?) helps you recommend the right material at the right price.
- Value engineering opportunities. On “Corian or equal” specs, presenting a color-matched alternative at 10-20% savings can win bids without sacrificing performance.
- Warranty implications. Manufacturer warranty requires certified fabrication. Confirm whether your fabricator holds current Corian certification before committing to a warranty specification.
