A pharmacy counter is several work zones joined together. Treating it as one long finish selection hides the details that stop fabrication.
Map the zones
Identify:
- customer drop-off and pickup;
- accessible transaction section;
- staff data-entry and verification work;
- will-call storage interface;
- consultation area;
- sink/cleaning zone;
- equipment and printer locations; and
- any specialty compounding area.
Compounding conditions are outside a generic countertop guide. Route them through the pharmacy’s regulatory, design, and infection-control team.
Draw the transaction section
The U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards address sales and service counters, including approach, clear floor space, dimensions, and knee/toe clearance where applicable (ADA Standards). Show the payment terminal, pass-through, security glazing, privacy panel, and millwork—not just the top height.
Coordinate equipment and security
For monitors, printers, scanners, cash drawers, pass-through devices, and security components, record footprint, mounting, cable/grommet size, ventilation, service access, and support. Keep seams and brackets out of the service path.
ANSI/AWI 1236 structural requirements provide relevant coordination for cutouts, supports, joints, and overhangs (AWI structural requirements).
Separate cleaning claims by zone
CDC describes environmental cleaning programs for healthcare settings as organized facility systems (CDC environmental cleaning programs). Confirm the operator’s procedures and selected material documentation, especially around sinks or clinical-adjacent work.
Review privacy and line of sight
Transaction height, pass-throughs, monitors, partitions, and equipment can change what customers and staff can see. The project design/security team owns that decision, but the countertop drawing must show every device or cutout affecting it.
At consultation counters, coordinate acoustical/privacy elements with accessible approach and staff workflow. Do not add a raised ledge or screen after the accessible section has been approved without rechecking the complete elevation.
Pharmacy top schedule
| Zone | Confirm |
|---|---|
| Transaction | Accessible condition, equipment, security, edge, finish |
| Staff work | Ergonomics/design height, cable management, seams, supports |
| Sink | Exact fixtures, splash, water path, cleaning, cabinet clearance |
| Consultation | Privacy layout, accessible use, cleanable finish |
| Specialty | Separate approved regulatory/design criteria |
Use the building-type guide to coordinate public restroom and other facility counters separately. Label each pharmacy top by zone and mark. Production should not have to infer which section carries which requirement.
