Retail Countertop Specifications

June 25, 2026

Retail counters take public impact on one side and equipment, cables, cash handling, and staff workflow on the other. The front elevation can look simple while the top plan is packed with conflicts.

Separate customer and staff zones

Mark transaction, bagging, display, pickup, staff work, equipment, and accessible sections. Show heights and depths in plan and elevation. The U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards contain the federal sales/service-counter requirements (ADA Standards). Coordinate the exact approach, clear floor space, transaction equipment, and security condition with the design professional.

Build an equipment map

For every register, scanner, payment terminal, printer, monitor, scale, pass-through, security device, and grommet, record:

  • manufacturer/model and footprint;
  • mounting/cutout;
  • power/data path;
  • heat/ventilation;
  • service access;
  • support/weight; and
  • owner/contractor furnishing responsibility.

Keep seams and brackets away from service openings. ANSI/AWI 1236 structural requirements cover relevant joints, supports, cutouts, and overhangs (AWI structural requirements).

Specify the edge by exposure

Customer-facing edges, cart impact zones, outside corners, and employee work edges may need different treatment. Name each edge on the top plan. “Exposed edge typical” fails when one end dies into a wall and the other faces a queue.

Control rollout variation

For multi-store work, lock:

  • prototype top marks and revisions;
  • approved material/finish and alternates;
  • equipment kit and template revision;
  • left/right-handed conditions;
  • site field-verification form;
  • store number and packaging labels;
  • delivery sequence and receiving contact; and
  • exception approval process.

Do a first-store check before the full rollout. Compare the prototype drawings to the installed counter, equipment fit, cable path, accessible transaction use, edge exposure, and cleaning. Record changes as a new controlled prototype revision.

Do not solve a site exception by changing the master detail in an email. Mark whether the change is location-only or becomes the new standard, then update every affected store release deliberately.

AWI’s general and aesthetic requirements are useful review surfaces for coordinated fabrication and appearance (AWI general requirements, AWI aesthetic requirements).

Store release card

Do not release from a prototype alone. Attach the store ID, current layout, field conditions, equipment schedule, accessible detail, materials, seams, supports, and delivery date. The building-type pillar covers related public restroom and service applications.

Prototype where it helps. Verify where the building differs.
