“Plastic laminate, color by architect” leaves the estimator and fabricator to guess at the actual product. The color is one line in the callout. The laminate grade determines which sheet is being specified and what it is intended to do.
Grade is not a quality score
An HPL grade is not a simple good-better-best ranking. Manufacturers publish grades for different applications and forming conditions. Formica’s technical brief distinguishes grades such as general-purpose and postforming products and lists product-specific nominal properties and uses (Formica laminate grades technical brief).
Use the current technical data for the exact manufacturer and product. Do not copy a grade number from another brand’s detail and assume it translates.
The edge can decide the grade
A square self edge, separate applied edge, wood edge, or postformed profile does not use the same fabrication path. If the design requires a formed front edge or backsplash, the selected laminate must be approved for that forming condition. If the top uses a square edge, identify the visible joint and edge material.
The HPL vs. TFL guide explains the larger assembly difference. The commercial substrate guide covers what sits behind the HPL.
Finish changes more than the sample
The same pattern can look and perform differently across finishes. Texture affects reflected light, visible smudges, cleaning feel, and how a seam or scratch reads. Confirm availability in the selected grade; not every pattern-finish-grade combination is produced.
ANSI/AWI 1236 aesthetic requirements are useful for coordinating visible surfaces, joints, and appearance expectations, but they do not select the laminate for you (AWI aesthetic requirements).
Write the complete assembly
Use a callout with these fields:
| Field | Example of the decision—not a project specification |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Named approved manufacturer |
| Pattern | Exact number and name |
| Finish | Exact finish code/name |
| Grade | Manufacturer’s exact grade for the application |
| Substrate | Type, grade/performance, and thickness |
| Backer/balance | Required balancing construction |
| Front edge | Self edge, applied edge, formed profile, or other detail |
| End edge | Finished, field-scribed, abutting, or concealed |
| Backsplash | Material, height, edge, and joint |
| Finished thickness | Dimension coordinated with elevations and equipment |
Wilsonart’s HPL disclosure shows that the laminate sheet itself is a defined manufactured product (Wilsonart HPL health product declaration). The countertop still adds substrate, adhesive, backer, edges, cutouts, and installation conditions. Keep the product data and the assembly detail together.
Substitution review
When a bidder proposes another laminate, compare:
- exact pattern and finish—not a screen image;
- grade and intended use;
- thickness and forming capability;
- performance or disclosure requirements in the spec;
- availability for the project quantity;
- compatible substrate and adhesive system; and
- edge/detail impacts.
An “equal color” is not an equal product.
For HPL commercial countertops, send the approved selection with the plans and edge details. That gives the shop a buildable instruction instead of a color preference.
