The wrong cleaner can turn project closeout into a punch item. The wrong field repair can turn a small mark into a replacement top.
Care instructions must name the exact product installed.
Build a material register
For each top type, record:
- rooms and top marks;
- manufacturer, product, color/pattern, finish, and thickness;
- substrate and edge where applicable;
- seams, sink mounting, backsplash, and sealant;
- current manufacturer care document;
- approved routine cleaners and methods;
- prohibited chemicals, abrasives, heat, or actions;
- repair process and authorized contact;
- warranty; and
- spare material/lot information if provided.
Separate cleaning from disinfection
Facilities should define their process and products. CDC describes healthcare environmental cleaning as an organized program with procedures, training, supplies, and monitoring (CDC environmental cleaning programs).
Corian’s healthcare disinfectant bulletin is an example of product-specific compatibility information (Corian healthcare disinfectants bulletin). It does not authorize use on HPL, THINSCAPE, quartz, sealants, or another solid-surface brand.
Give the right instruction by material
HPL/TFL: protect joints, edges, and penetrations; follow exact laminate/panel care; do not let standing water reach the core.
Solid surface: follow manufacturer methods for routine cleaning and approved renewal/repair; do not improvise abrasive sequence or chemicals.
THINSCAPE/performance top: use Wilsonart’s current technical/care guidance for the selected product (Wilsonart THINSCAPE technical data).
Quartz/engineered stone: use the exact manufacturer’s care and repair process. Do not perform uncontrolled cutting or grinding; OSHA publishes silica-exposure requirements and resources for fabrication work (OSHA crystalline silica).
Inspect joints and sealants
Care includes noticing open wall joints, sink sealant failure, impact at edges, loose supports, and water paths before damage spreads. Assign who inspects and who is authorized to repair.
Train around predictable misuse
Facilities should know which actions create avoidable damage: placing hot equipment without the approved protection, cutting directly on the surface, leaving water at vulnerable joints, using an abrasive pad, or treating an edge as a lifting point. Keep the instruction material-specific and short enough to use.
Post the correct cleaner and method in high-turnover staff areas where the facility permits it. Retain the full technical documents in closeout records. When a new cleaner or disinfectant is introduced, verify it against every surface and sealant it will contact before routine use.
Closeout package
Give facilities one concise matrix plus the current source documents—not a generic bottle recommendation. The punch-list guide should confirm surfaces are accepted before handoff.
Exact product. Exact cleaner. Exact repair path. That is a usable maintenance guide.
